Meet the 2016-2017 Honors Scholars
Karen Kanazawa
Karen Kanazawa is an International Student from Japan and earned her AA in Business. At Highline, Karen is a member of the International Leadership Student Council where she supports other International Students during their transition into the Highline community by leading events and being a mentor. Karen is also involved in Highline’s Honors Program and received the International Student Programs Scholarship, Leadership Recognition Scholarship and Business Saugen Scholarship from Pacific Lutheran University ($20,000). In the future, Karen plans to pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s in International Business and Finance.
Kendall F. Evans
Kendall F. Evans came to Highline after served in the U.S. Army. He also had a career as a metal construction worker. In the past, he spent many years being incarcerated because of hardship with addictions. After changing his life, Kendall will graduate with a BAS in Human Services and Youth Development. At Highline, he received NAEOP Scholastic Achievement Award ($1500) and a TRiO Scholarship ($1000). Passionate about helping service members, he hopes to make their transition to Highline smooth and successful. Forthcoming, he plans to pursue a Master’s in Public Administration at the University of Washington.
Kevin Nguyen
Kevin Nguyen is an international student from Vietnam, completing an AA with an emphasis in Computer Science. He loves Highline because it helped him build a strong academic foundation that prepared him for the next step in his academic career at the Illinois Institution of Technology, where he received an International Transfer scholarship of $22,500. There, where he will pursue a BS in Computer Science.
Julia Duong
Julia Duong is a U.S. immigrant from Vietnam. She will receive a high school diploma and an AA in Business from Highline. Julia has many plans after graduation, one of which is to pursue a BA in Science and a Master’s in Business at the University of Washington. Julia’s long-term goal is to become a Natural Science Manager.
Nhi Lam (Hailey) Tran
Hailey Tran is an international student from Vietnam. She will earn an AA with an emphasis in Communications. She chose to attend Highline because of the programs and its diverse community. She feels that coming to Highline was one of the best decision of her life because she was able to take advantage of opportunities, such as working as a Writing Consultant at Writing Center and being a Cashier at the Bookstore. These opportunities allowed Hailey to meet amazing co-workers and people from different cultures that shaped who she is today and helped her become a better version of herself. At Highline, Hailey received an Internationship Student Program Scholarship ($1000) and Leadership Recognition Scholarship ($1000). Hailey will transfer to Seattle University where she will major in Communications and minor in Public Relations.
Wong Pui (Serena) Shan
Wong Pui Shan is an international student from Hong Kong. She chose to attend Highline because of its diverse community. Wong Pui will graduate with an AA in Business. She is very passionate about photography and wants to continue expanding her knowledge in this area and eventually start a photography business. After Highline, Wong Pui will transfer to Seattle University and pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Ronald C. Scott II
Ronald C. Scott II is from Washington State. He spent 6 years in the Army and working in a humanitarian position in northern Thai refugee camps. He will graduate from Highline with an AA in Business. In fall 2017, he will attend the University of Washington and pursue a BA in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. Ronald’s long-term goal is to go to attend law school and eventually practice immigration law, which will allow him to represent refugees and asylum seekers who have been displaced and contribute to the greater good of humanity.
Teran Long
Teran Long was a running start student from Kentridge High School. He chose to study at Highline for the programs and classes in Computer Science, a field where he will earn an AS degree. Later, he plans to transfer to the University of Washington and study Computer Science. Teran’s long term-goal is to work for an innovative company linked with artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Yalan Xu
Yalan Xu traveled from a town called Shunde in the South part of China in the Guangdong Province to study at Highline, where she earned an AA in Business.. She chose Highline to fulfil her interest in English and because of the diverse community here and has built many relationships with people from different countries. Though she will miss Highline, she plans to transfer to Penn State University in the fall 2017 and major in Economics. In the future, Yalan plans to earn a Master’s in Statistics and an intern at a United States bank.
