Eddy on the Honors Program

In winter of 2006, I immigrated to the U.S. from Kenya, having plans for continuing with my education, but I wasn’t sure if Highline was the right place for me. I gladly look back and realize that choosing Highline was one of my best life decisions. After one of year of attending Highline Community College, I graduated with an Associate of Science degree in Physics, gained acceptance to a competitive engineering program at two of the top performing universities in the Northwest, and earned $11,000 in scholarships from one of the institutions.

Even though I had to put in some extra effort to earn these recognitions, much of the credit goes to the wonderful Highline faculty and advisors, led by the Honors Scholar Program, which provided me with the keys to open the doors to success. The Honors program, not only ensured that I set the right educational goals, but also helped me in excelling as an individual outside of school; Dr. Clinton provides a place to turn to, helping with educational advising or support if a little counseling is needed. I experienced one-on-one educational advising and guidance on basic life issues, and I still go back to her even after leaving Highline. Through the program, students are provided with an open door to a longtime friendship, rather than a professor-student type of relationship. This rapport develops a community between students, as sharing of ideas and collaborative projects are encouraged in the different classes.

As a member of the Honor Scholar Program, I got help with writing several versions of my academic resume, scholarship applications, the transfer application that got me to where I am today (a University of Washington electrical engineering graduate who has begun a career at Boeing), and the mental bravery to confront different life situations.
